Today’s contributor is shocked by a new boyfriend’s premature confession
I had been dating this guy for about two weeks and we were really into each other. It seemed like the kind of thing that could eventually become serious, but it was still too soon to tell. One night, I was staying over at his apartment and forced him to watch a marathon of Grey’s Anatomy. We were watching a particularly emotional episode—it was clear that it was getting to both of us.
“I’m a guy. I can’t start liking this show,” he said, and told me he was going to sleep. He turned to give me a kiss, and as he rolled over, he said it:
“I love you.”
My mouth immediately dropped. “What???” I said, freaking out. I mean, I was flattered, but we’d only known each other for a couple of weeks.
“Oh my God, I didn’t mean to say that,” he quickly explained. “I don’t love you! I mean, I could love you in the future…hopefully…but I didn’t mean to say that right now! Look what this show made me do. I’m emotionally vulnerable!” The boy was digging himself into a deeper and deeper hole.
After assuring him that I didn’t think he was crazy, we went to bed in awkward silence. The next morning, he brought it up to make sure that everything was still good between us. I told him not to worry, and that everything was fine. It was just the show talking, after all…right?
Editor’s Note: This is pretty bad, but at least he didn’t embarrass himself with Meredith’s humiliating “pick me, choose me, love me” speech.
