1. UNDERAGE AND ENRAGED

A blind date tanks when today’s contributor’s guy can’t get tipsy

I once went on a blind date with a guy a few years ago, before I turned 21. Since I still lived at home in the suburbs, I traveled into the city to meet him at a restaurant he picked out. It turned out that the restaurant was actually a bar, and since I wasn’t 21 I couldn’t get in. Instead, we had to meet in the bar’s parking lot. We eventually found another place to go, but my date was irrationally upset about not being able to drink. Clearly, the guy wasn’t as interested in our date as he was in getting hammered.

He acted pissed off and distant for the rest of the evening, which made our date tense and awkward. To make it worse, he acted like it was my fault that I wasn’t 21 yet and then asked me why I “had kept it from him”—as if being unable to legally drink is some kind of dating deal breaker. I guess this guy was jonesing bad for some booze, because he was still so mad at the end of the night that he made me pay for dinner. He didn’t even offer to drop me off at the train station, so I was stuck taking the subway even though he had his car. I can only imagine that once I was out of sight, he made a beeline to the nearest bar and picked up a girl who better supported his drinking habits.
